View of Folkestone East Cliff

Folkestone East Cliff. Folkestone has a very long history stretching back way beyond the predominantly Victorian town we see today. Archaeological excavations in the early twentieth century at the East Cliff revealed a large Roman Villa. When this area was re-excavated in 2010/11 further Roman artefacts were discovered together with evidence of prehistoric activity on the site. This photograph was taken from the footpath which leads towards Capel from the East Cliff and shows not only the flat area where the villa stood but also later history with the Napoleonic Martello Tower on the headland in the background. Pre-photo visits revealed that an early morning shoot in the winter would provide good lighting and this proved to be accurate with this shot taking place one Saturday morning in January.
