Sound Mirrors in 3d
Sound Mirrors, otherwise known as Listening Ears are concrete constructions mainly in South East England constructed to act as early warning devices against air attack. They date from the late 1920's, early 30's. To a certain extent they were successful but the rapid pace of aircraft design and the speeds they could reach soon rendered sound mirror technology obsolete. RADAR soon came along and sound mirrors were consigned to history. The pictures in this 3d gallery are of the mirror on the hills behind Hythe in South East Kent and the mirror on Abbotts Cliff near Capel. They are wonderful and evocative constructions which are unfortunately left to the elements and vandalism.
