Medieval Churches on Romney Marsh
Romney Marsh in south Kent is an ancient place full of history and mystery. An enduring feature of this landscape are the medieval churches many of which will accomodate a larger congregation than the immediate surrounding population.
All Saints Church Lydd is often referred to as the Cathedral of the Marsh. It is certainly a large building which is 199 feet long with a tower 138 feet high. Cardinal Thomas Wolsey was rector here in the 16th century. In 1940 the east end of the chancel was destroyed by a bomb and was rebuilt after the end of the war.
